Course Introduction

The unit standard is intended for persons who are required to use gangway signals by selecting the correct position and signal equipment according to operational requirements. They are also able to conduct continuous assessment of the lifting gear and evaluate the slinging methods to ensure safe operating practice.

They are also able to conduct continuous assessment of the lifting gear and evaluate the slinging methods to ensure safe operating practices.

Pre-requisites:

It is assumed that learners accessing this unit standard are competent in:

  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

By the end of the course the learners will be able to understand:

  • Recognise, interpret and demonstrate approved gangway signals as per SA Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice
  • Select position and use correct signalling equipment and apply signals according to operational requirements
  • Conduct continuous assessments of lofting gear and safer slinging practices as per industry best practice
