The holiday season is filled with happiness and celebration, but it can also be a time of danger for road users.
It seems everyone is in a hurry trying to wrap up their shopping and enjoy festive celebrations. But as you’re dashing around, it’s important to keep road safety top of mind, as the streets are busier and drivers are distracted by their holiday to-do list.
1. Go for a tune up
For smooth sailing (and overall sanity), make sure your vehicle is roadworthy. For longer trips, make sure that your tires, battery, belts, fluids, and the air conditioner is checked by a qualified mechanic.
2. Safety belt safety
Always make sure you and your passengers are buckled up.
3. Be well rested
Drive only when well rested, and switch licensed driver every few hours, if possible.
4. Don’t drink and drive
Don’t drink and drive and be cautious of weather conditions that may affect your driving
5. Break up the trip
Stop often in well lit, public areas to have a quick pit stop. Drinking non-alcoholic beverages will also help keep you more alert and force you to take bathroom breaks
6. Speed kills
For the safety of yourself, your passengers and other road users. Always adhere to the speed limit and make sure you and your passengers wear a seat belt at all times.
7. Be alert
Remain alert to any areas that might present a threat of criminal activity such as hijackings or smash and grabs.
8. Stay connected
Pack cell phone and GPS chargers in case of emergencies. Be sure to also have emergencies numbers logged on your cell phone.
9. First aid kit
Have a first aid kit for any unforeseen injuries or illnesses. It’s also wise to subscribe to a roadside assistance plan.
Keep a safe following distance, this will give you enough time to react in case of an emergency.
Wishing you and your family a happy and safe holiday season.
